7 Items to Bring to the Hospital After Bariatric Surgery

Hospital

Regardless of what bariatric surgery you’re having, it is helpful to prepare for your hospital stay. While you will not be in the hospital for a very long time, typically less than 24 hours, a few items might help make your stay at the hospital more comfortable. Do your best to pack light. Not everything listed below needs to be brought to the hospital. This is just a list to get you thinking about what you may find to be helpful.

Toiletries Kit

Bringing along a toiletries kit can help you feel refreshed and clean during your hospital stay. Some items to consider including are:

Comfortable Clothing

Wearing comfortable clothing during your hospital stay can help you feel more at ease and relaxed. Additionally, you might be a little sore or tender at the incision sites. Consider wearing and bringing:

Slip-Resistant Footwear

Slip-resistant footwear is important to help prevent falls while you are walking around the hospital. Be prepared to have the nurses encouraging you to walk around after your surgery as a key part of recovery. Consider bringing:

Reading Materials

Reading is a great way to pass the time and keep your mind occupied while you're in the hospital. Consider bringing a good book, magazine, or newspaper to read during your stay. You can also bring a tablet or e-reader like a Kindle loaded with your favorite books and magazines.

Just make sure you continue to be mindful of sipping your water!

Electronic Devices and Chargers

Electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops can help you stay connected with your loved ones and keep you entertained during your hospital stay. Make sure to bring all the necessary chargers and cables to keep your devices charged and ready to use.

Having an extra long charger for your phone may also be incredibly helpful as the wall outlets might be a little far from your hospital bed. Amazon has some great options.

Comfort Items

In addition to these items, you may also want to bring a comfortable pillow, ear plugs or an eye mask if your surgery is later in the day and you will be spending the night. Anything to help an unfamiliar environment feel a bit more familiar or comfortable can really help with sleep.

Identification and Medical Cards

It is crucial to bring your identification (drivers license) and insurance cards with you to the hospital.
