Vertical Sleeve GastrectomyLaparoscopic Sleeve/Tube Gastrectomy

Vertical Gastrectomy, or VG, involves the creation of a long, narrow vertical pouch measuring 2-4 oz. and is identical to the duodenal switch pouch but smaller and with no intestinal bypass. VG significantly restricts the volume of food that may be consumed, with no malabsorbtion and no dumping or diarrhea, weight regain may be more likely than in other procedures if strict dietary are not followed throughout the patient's lifetime. This weight loss surgery is used for high-risk or very heavy (BMI>60kg/m2) patients as a "first stage" procedure. It is associated with a very low rate of complications because patients spend less time in the operating room and intestinal bypass is not performed.
